A new Melling pickup tube and screen feeds the oil pump while protecting it from debris that finds its way into the oil. Contaminants from engine wear and extended oil change intervals can restrict flow and interfere with the pressure relief spring, leading to engine damage. Melling suggests a new, properly installed pickup and screen with every oil pump installation.
