What Is a Flooded Lead-Acid Battery?
The flooded lead-acid battery is the most common, time-tested car battery on the road – it’s been starting vehicles for over a century. Inside are six cells, each with lead plates submerged in a liquid mix of sulfuric acid and water called electrolyte. When you turn the key, the plates react with the acid to make electricity; while you drive, the alternator reverses the process and recharges it.
Because the liquid moves freely around the plates, you’ll also hear them called “wet cell” batteries. Modern versions like the Pow-R-Surge automotive line use a calcium lead alloy for a maintenance-free design – you never add water.
Why drivers choose flooded
- Lowest upfront cost – the budget-friendly way to get reliable starts.
- Strong cold-weather cranking – Pow-R-Surge flooded batteries are built for “more starting power-per-pound in all weather conditions.”
- Huge range of sizes – select models feature a dual-terminal design that fits hundreds of applications.
Things to keep in mind
- Vented design – it must be mounted upright.
- Keep terminals clean to prevent corrosion build-up; older-style serviceable batteries also need fluid checks.
- More sensitive to heavy vibration and repeated deep discharges than AGM.
What Is an AGM Battery?
AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat – a modern evolution of lead-acid technology. Instead of sloshing liquid, the electrolyte is soaked into fibreglass mats packed tightly between the plates. The result is a sealed, spill-proof, maintenance-free battery that can be mounted in almost any position.
Because the plates can be packed tighter, internal resistance drops – so an AGM delivers power faster, recharges more efficiently and stands up to the demands of today’s electronics-heavy vehicles. AGMs are also less prone to sulfation, a common cause of early failure in flooded batteries.
Why drivers choose AGM
- Built for high electrical demand – start-stop systems, driver-assist tech, winches, light bars, big audio and hydraulic kits.
- Tough – Pow-R-Surge rates its AGM Power line at 20x more vibration protection than conventional flooded batteries.
- Longer life – up to 2x the cycle life (Pow-R-Surge, vs. flooded).
- Winter-ready – excellent cold cranking and high freeze-resistance.
- Spill-proof – protects your vehicle and electronics, and can be mounted where a flooded battery can’t.
⚠️ Came with an AGM? Stick with an AGM.
If your vehicle left the factory with an AGM battery (common on start-stop and newer vehicles), don’t downgrade to flooded – the charging system and electronics are designed around it. Upgrading a flooded-equipped vehicle to AGM, on the other hand, is a great move.
Flooded vs. AGM: Side-by-Side
| Flooded Lead-Acid | AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Lead plates in free-flowing liquid electrolyte | Electrolyte absorbed in tightly packed fibreglass mats |
| Maintenance | Low – keep terminals clean; check fluid on serviceable types | Maintenance-free – sealed, never add water |
| Mounting | Must stay upright (vented) | Sealed & spill-proof – mounts in almost any position |
| Cold-weather cranking | Good – size CCA for our winters | Excellent – lower internal resistance delivers power faster |
| Vibration resistance | Standard | High – compressed plates resist shock & vibration |
| Recharge & cycling | Best for start-and-go daily use | Recharges faster & handles repeated deep draws better |
| Service life | Good | Longer – up to 2x cycle life* |
| Upfront cost | $ – most affordable | $$–$$$ – pays back in life & performance |
| Best for | Daily drivers, older vehicles, budget-friendly replacement | Start-stop, high-tech & accessory-heavy vehicles, off-road, marine, RV, performance |
*Pow-R-Surge AGM cycle-life and vibration claims are compared to conventional flooded batteries, per the manufacturer.
Which Battery Is Best for Your Vehicle?
- You drive a daily commuter or an older vehicle that came with a flooded battery
- Your electrical needs are stock – no big accessories
- You want dependable winter starts at the best price
- Lawn & garden, farm and general-purpose use
- Your vehicle has start-stop or came with an AGM from the factory
- You run winches, lighting, upfitter gear or a big stereo
- You go off-road, tow, or deal with rough roads and vibration
- You need power for an RV, boat, or vehicle that sits for long periods
❄️ Alberta tip: size for winter
Cold-Cranking Amps (CCA) measure how well a battery starts your engine in the cold. Always meet or beat your vehicle’s required CCA – and when in doubt, go up. Our staff can look up the right group size and rating for your vehicle.

Are AGM batteries better than flooded lead-acid?
For most modern vehicles, yes – AGMs deliver more power, are maintenance-free, handle vibration better and last longer. Flooded batteries remain a smart, affordable choice for stock vehicles that were designed for them.
Can I replace an AGM battery with a flooded one?
We don’t recommend it. If your vehicle came with an AGM, its charging system and electronics expect one. Going the other way – flooded to AGM – is a worthwhile upgrade.
Do AGM batteries handle cold weather better?
Yes. Lower internal resistance means AGMs deliver cranking power quickly in the cold, which is a big plus for Alberta winters.
How do I know what battery fits my vehicle?
You’ll need the right BCI group size, terminal layout and CCA rating. Call or visit any JB’s Power Centre location and we’ll find the right fit.
Are old batteries recyclable?
Absolutely – both flooded and AGM batteries are recyclable. AGMs are sealed and less likely to leak, while flooded batteries need more careful handling.
