Golden rule: Because it is practically impossible to overcool an automatic transmission, the biggest cooler that will physically fit your vehicle is always the best choice. When in doubt, go bigger.

    Calculate your weight requirements

    Your cooler's Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) rating should safely exceed the heaviest load your vehicle will handle. The general rule: select a cooler rated for at least 3× your total vehicle weight.

    Daily driving:  Curb weight × 3 = minimum GVW rating
    Towing:        (Vehicle weight + trailer weight) × 3 = minimum GVW rating
    Example: Your truck weighs 5,000 lbs and you tow a 8,000 lb trailer.
    (5,000 + 8,000) × 3 = 39,000 lb minimum GVW cooler rating
